Who is Sylvia?
I grew up in southern Illinois and received my Bachelor's Degree, in Music Education, from Harding University in 1969. After teaching for 3 years (2 in Illinois, 1 in Nashville), I moved to Memphis in 1977 -- after spending some time in graduate school at the University of Memphis, I made a career change to computer programming and completed a 2-year degree in Data Processing at Southwest Tennessee Community College (formerly State Technical Institute). After working for 2 small businesses and then 4 years at Schering-Plough, I was hired by Federal Express in 1988 and left in April 2009. My programming and Project Management experience at FedEx included International Accounting, Logistics, package tracking, and counter (airbill) shipping (FedEx and Kinkos Service Centers). I currently work as a contractor (Project Manager) in Information Technology for Accredo Health.
My hobbies and community involvement include ballroom dancing and line dancing, committee/board member for MidSouthCon (Memphis' annual science fiction convention), board member for Network of Memphis (progressive, profesional, and entrepreneurial women), volunteer usher for The Orpheum Theatre, volunteer for the annual St. Jude Golf Tournament, and volunteer photographer and assistant for Real Good Dog Rescue, a local organization that rescues dogs from area animal shelters and finds them good homes.
I have been a citizen and registered voter in the city of Memphis for over 34 years. I ran for, and was elected to, the Memphis Charter Commission (for District 2) in August of 2006. The Charter Commission presented 6 referendum items on the November 2008 election ballot - all 6 were overwhelmingly approved by the voters. Those items were: require voter approval to sell MLG&W, require elected officials with official malfeasance to be suspended with pay pending resolution of the matter, amended the process to fill the vacancy of the Mayor, term limits for the Mayor and City Council, instant runoff voting, and staggered terms for City Council (revoked per City Council referendum item approved in the November 2010 election).
My 30 years of experience with IT project development and project management has equipped me with excellent analytical, evaluation, and organizational skills. I am experenced in the development of major projects and the management of changes, additions, and deletions to those projects. I believe I can apply those skills in my role as a City Council member. I am also the treasurer for 2 local non-profit organizations, so I have experience with financial management.
